On Saturday, May 21, relatives, friends, neighbors and local community leaders joined to honor and celebrate Gus Vlahavas, owner of the legendary Tom's Restaurant, on the occasion of his retirement. Official festivities began at 11 am with a proclamation from City Council Member Letitia James and words from Borough President Marty Markowitz, as well as music and entertainment from the Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band and the Noel Pointer Foundation's Children's Band.

The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) is beginning a capital construction project on Atlantic Avenue project from Carlton Avenue to Classon Avenue and on Washington Avenue from Atlantic Avenue to Fulton Avenue. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2012.
There are several work operations slated to occur as part of this project including:
The NYC Department of Design and Construction is managing the capital construction project: Eastern Parkway Project between Washington Avenue and Underhill Avenue. To facilitate some work operations, water shutdowns are necessary. Water shut-off will occur at/about 8:00AM on Monday, May 2, lasting for approximately eight (8) hours.
These impacts are associated with the installation of the 12” water main, being performed by the NYC Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) for the Eastern Parkway Project.
Some things to remember:

A group of parent advocates in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, has won an appeal to the New York State Commissioner of Education David M. Steiner requesting annulment of the vote by the Panel on Educational Policy (PEP) that would co-locate Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School with P.S. 9 and M.S. 571 in building K009 at 80 Underhill Avenue, Brooklyn, beginning in fall of 2011.
