The next 77th Precinct Community Council meeting will take place at 7:30 PM on Monday, January 9 at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. Precinct Council meetings enable community members to raise issues and voice concerns about crime and quality of life problems in their neighborhoods to the commanding officer of their local police precinct. You’ll also find out more about police activities in and around your area.

Description:
On Wednesday, November 9 at 9:30 am, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at P.S. 9 in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn to celebrate the opening of the school’s new playground. What was once a bleak asphalt lot with only a basketball court and small playgym is now completely refurbished playground with a handful of active and stimulating playspaces. There will also be student performances and comments from school officials and representatives from Out2Play, the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office and Brooklyn Nets Community Alliance.

City DOE issues revised plan to co-locate charter at P.S. 9
Posted: April 19, 2011 - 7:59amAfter its previous decision to co-locate Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School at Prospect Heights' P.S. 9 was overturned by the New York State Commissioner of Education David Steiner, the City's Department of Education has issued a revised plan it says addresses the issues raised by Commissioner Steiner.
The new plan, which parents and local elected officials have vowed to oppose, will be voted on by the DOE's Panel for Education Policy on May 18.
State Education Commissioner overturns DOE decision to co-locate charter school with P.S. 9
Posted: April 1, 2011 - 8:39amA group of parent advocates in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, has won an appeal to the New York State Commissioner of Education David M. Steiner requesting annulment of the vote by the Panel on Educational Policy (PEP) that would co-locate Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School with P.S. 9 and M.S. 571 in building K009 at 80 Underhill Avenue, Brooklyn, beginning in fall of 2011.
DOE panel votes to close M.S. 571, replace with charter school
Posted: February 4, 2011 - 10:00amAt a meeting Thursday evening that stretched into early Friday morning, the Department of Education Panel on Education Policy voted to close M.S. 571, located at 80 Underhill Avenue in the P.S. 9 building. The PEP further voted to co-locate the Brooklyn East Collegiate charter school in the P.S. 9 building. Brooklyn East Collegiate currently serves the East New York neighborhood.

Description:
Last Month, the NYC Department of Education released the Educational Impact Statement proposing the phase-out of M.S. 571 - The Bergen Upper School, and a re-siting and co-location of Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School in the 13K009 building. The DOE claims M.S. 571 “lacks the capacity to turn around” and there’s a need of high-quality options in school district 13. Much like P.S. 316 and M.S. 353, the DOE is not allowing the possible expansion and growth of P.S. 9.
Join parents, students and public officials who are demanding local schools be given a chance to succeed and grow!
