The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council

Neighborhood development study

Prospect Heights has long been a diverse community of residents with a range of needs and opinions. In June of 2004, PHNDC commissioned a study by the Pratt Center for Community Development of neighborhood priorities and concerns with respect to development in Prospect Heights. The study was based upon a survey of over 400 Prospect Heights community members designed by the Pratt Center.

The results of the study, published in October 2004, highlighted common views held by many of the survey respondents. While residents favored development, they also valued and wanted to retain certain neighborhood characteristics. These include:

  • social and economic diversity,
  • good public transportation,
  • access to parks and open space,
  • architectural quality and neighborhood character, and
  • a strong sense of community.

Residents, however, wanted future development to address the neighborhood’s current shortcomings. Key areas identified that required improvement were:

  • public education,
  • public safety,
  • housing opportunities for low and moderate income households, and
  • street conditions, traffic safety and parking availability.

Since the time the Pratt study was released, PHNDC has used its findings to help inform decisions about key initiatives we've undertaken in Prospect Heights, including traffic calming on Vanderbilt Avenue, and the creation of a Prospect Heights historic district.
