Location:
Soda Bar
629 Vanderbilt Avenue Brooklyn, NY
United States
Description:

"Remember New Orleans" is a fundraiser and awareness-raiser for New Orleans. All proceeds will go to the New Orleans Kid Camera Project, a non-profit created to address the psychological and emotional impacts of Hurricane Katrina on children returning home to New Orleans. New Orleans still suffers greatly from the hurricane of two years ago. Much of the city's infrastructure is still non-functional, schools and hospitals have not re-opened, the crime rate is the highest in the nation, and the city has lost half its population since the storm.

The evening's program will include a live second-line brass band, a slideshow about the current state of New Orleans, an auction of artwork from the Kid Camera Project, and films by Helen Hill, a filmmaker and resident of New Orleans who was killed in January during a crime wave in the city. Traditional New Orleanian fare will also be available.

Concerned neighbors Alice McFarland and Kate Suisman are sponsoring this event, in the hopes of informing Brooklynites about the still dire situation in New Orleans, as well as to raise funds for a unique, effective non-profit.
