Prospect Heights neighbors write in support of historic designation

|

In March, PHNDC sent over 8,500 flyers to Prospect Heights residents explaining the plight of the historic buildings of our neighborhood. The mailing urged community members to speak out in support of historic designation to protect the character and scale of this neighborhood.

Over 400 response cards have been received to date from the mailing. Some of the notes written by Prospect Heights residents appear below.

"I'm a homeowner in the proposed historic district and support it 100%! I live across the street from 330 Park Place--it can't happen again!" - T.F.

"Thank you for the work on this. Prospect Heights is beautiful and should be landmarked. It is a shame about Atlantic Yards going in--more reason to save what is left." - C.L.

"Change is inevitable. But change should be thoughtful, deliberate and sensitive to both context and history." - T.T.

"Preserve what we still have, and the future generations will be grateful." - N.B.

"Be sure to include St. Johns, Lincoln and Eastern Parkway between the Plaza and Washington Avenue." - B.B and P.D.

"I have lived in Prospect Heights all my life, and it saddens me to see the way they are changing our neighborhood." - C.A.

"Please help us preserve our heritage--the beautiful craftmanship of these historic buildings and the scale of our dwelings!" - B.I.

"To live in the shadow of the coming stadium will be enough! Save my community's residential and historic ambience for our children, our future!" - C.E.

"This should have been done a long time ago. We can remember the past but we cannot reclaim it, once lost!" - V.S.

"Renovate the inside of buildings. Leave the outside the way they are!" - M.Z and K.M.

"How's it possible that vitually every surrounding neighborhood to Prospect Heights has an historic desgination, but Propsect Heights, with the same architecture, does not?" - D.G.

"We need to protect the low-density, low roofline on Vanderbilt Avenue in particular." - D. and J.H.

"Why must Brooklyn look like Manhattan?" - E.G. and R.C.

"Some development is good. But we seem to have lost control to the worst of the worst. I am reluctant, but yes." - A.G.
