The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council

This morning at 9:45AM, a portion of the parapet of the Ward Bakery building collapsed onto the sidewalk of Pacific Street. Asbestos abatement by Forest City Ratner had been underway in the building for several weeks.
No one was injured. However, the incident highlights the lack of independent monitoring and publicly-accountabble oversight that have been a hallmark of the Atlantic Yards project since its approval by the ESDC and the Public Authorities Control Board in December 2006.

Seventeen private gardens may be visited on this self-guided tour through the three historic Brooklyn neighborhoods of Ft. Greene, Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights. Free shuttle van service will be provided, circling between the three neighborhoods. This may be your last chance to see a pair of adjacent gardens in Prospect Heights. These two gardens occupy the western edge of Brooklyn's first botanic garden, Parmentier's Horticultural & Botanic Gardens. They currently fall within the footprint of Bruce Ratner's proposed 22-acre Atlantic Center and are threatened with condemnation through use of eminent domain.
Highlights of the tour include a triple lot garden with several cascades & ponds, a double lot garden with brick cottage & mature trees. Both of these gardens evolved over a long period of time created by individuals, avid gardeners, long time residents of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, who owned adjoining properties and instead of filling space with building additions, used the empty spaces to create garden oases. $15 Advance tickets sold at Tillie's, 248 DeKalb Ave. and the Forest Floor, 659 Vanderbilt Ave. $20 Day of tour tickets at Tillie's, the Forest Floor, or the BAM Triangle Garden, intersection of Fulton St. and Lafayette Ave. Advance ticket holders must exchange their ticket for a tour map at one of these locations before beginning the self-guided tour.
The Brownstone Brooklyn Garden District, sponsor of the Garden Walk, is a coalition of three Downtown Brooklyn neighborhoods, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights, with a common interest in improving quality of life through greening of the urban environment. Garden Walk ticket sales support the Annual Fall Bulb Give-Away for planting flowering bulbs in public spaces throughout the Garden District.

Forest City Ratner plans to begin demolition of buildings on the Atlantic Yards site beginning Monday, April 23. Construction coordination and independent environmental monitoring as specified by the ESDC are not yet in place. Safety violations during asbestos abatement thus far have caused DEP to issue stop work orders at the site. The safety of the surrounding community would be at risk should large-scale demolition commence in advance of necessary controls being established.
The protest will be at 8am in front of 191 Flatbush Avenue between 5th Avenue and Dean Street in Brooklyn. Please come out to the protest Monday morning to tell Governor Spitzer and Mayor Bloomberg, that these demolitions must not go forward under the present conditions.
